walkingtour discovering Inquisition places
NEW WORLD vs. INQUISITION
The 15th century and especially in 1478, the Royal Inquisition was instituted in Castile due to the papal bull of Sixtus IV with the purpose of fighting against the Jewish practices of the new-converts. In contrast to the previous Inquisitions, it operated completely under Royal Christian authority, ruled by Clergy and orders, independently of the Holy See. It operated in Spain and in all Spanish colonies and territories, which included the Canary Islands, the Spanish Netherlands, the Kingdom of Naples, and all Spanish possessions in North, Central and South America. It primarily targeted forced converts from Islam and Judaism - both groups still resided in Spain after the end of the Islamic Control- who came under suspicion of continuing practicing their old religion or having fallen back into it.
All places related to the Spanish Inquisition such as Triana Neighbourhood, the castle of St. George, Town Hall, Archive of Indies, Gold Tower, santa Cruz Quarter . . .
