The Orkney Bucket List
Doing what many would consider the 'must see' of Orkney, this tour travels through 5, 000 years of history and gives a taste of some of the best Orkney has to offer, like the Italian Chapel, Churchill Barriers, Scapa Flow, The Standing Stones of Stenness, Ring of Brodgar, Skara Brae and Skaill House.
The tour can be done in 5 hours if I don't talk too much, but best to allow for 6 hours!
Learn how Scapa Flow, (a natural harbor) UB47 (a submarine) Churchill barriers (a roadway) and the Italian Chapel (built by Italian POW's) are linked in one story, a story that changed the Geography, the Geology, the Economy and Orkney itself forever.
Visit the heart of Neolithic Orkney a UNESCO World Heritage site, learn what archaeologists think life was like 5, 000 years ago, explore the home of a Neolithic family at Skara Brae, walk, touch and wonder why the stone circles were built.
Skaill House, the oldest manor house in Orkney, which has been in the same family for 12 generations.
The average tour plan would consist of these points of interest, originally meeting at any point of designation (cruise ship landing point, local town, hotel etc. ), followed by visiting points of interest as mentioned below.
Italian Chapel built by Italian Prisoners of War during WW2
Churchill Barriers built during WW2 by the Italian PoW's
Scapa Flow large natural harbor and home to the British navy during WW1 and WW2
Neolithic Stone Circles, The Standing Stones of Stenness possibly the oldest stone circle in the UK and the
Ring of Brodgar the largest stone circle in Orkney
Skara Brae 5, 000-year-old stone village (**Food and drink available here**)
Skaill House The largest manor house in Orkney

The Orkney Islands are incredibly beautiful. Mark was very accommodating, and we toured the historical and geographical areas of interest on the island coming back for the last two hours and picking up my mother. John's wife Mary is also a tour guide. They make a great team working together during the tour to make sure their customers are having a good time — a delightful visit to the Orkney Islands.
