Private Pergamon Tour From Izmir or Kusadasi
You will visit the Acropolis which was once the cultural center of the Hellenistic Period. It had a very famous library, as big as the one in Alexandria. It also had a famous school of architecture, perfect government buildings and monuments, including the world famous Zeus Altar. It also played an important role during the beginning of Christianity in the Roman Period, and one of the Seven Churches of the Revelations is located here. After the Acropolis you will visit the Ascelepion, which was dedicated to the God of Good Health, "Asklepios". This was an important medical center where people received medical treatments such as massages, mud baths, drinking of the sacred waters and the use of herbs and ointments. Diagnosis was often by dream analysis. After visiting Ascelepion you will be driven back to Izmir.
Our trip will lead us through the famous sights of Pergamon like Temple of Athena, Temple of Trajan and Altar of Zeus situated on the terraces of the acropolis. From here we'll be brought to the lower city of Pergamon, which is now inside the modern city of Bergama.
You can see the majestic acropolis of Pergamon on a hill over the modern city of Bergama, around 80 km north of Izmir or 150 km north of Kusadasi. Pergamon was famous for its library, next to Alexandria the most important library in ancient world. Previously around 200. 000 volumes were kept here.
From here our way goes to the most important Asclepeion in ancient word. Asclepeion is coming from Asclepius, the god for medicine and healing - we know until today the Rod of Asclepius as a sign for medicine, and was a healing temple in ancient Greece and Rome.
The Asclepeion of Pergamon sure became most famous because of the physician and philosopher Galen of Pergamon who founded here the basement of modern medicine.
