A jump into classical architecture...for architecture lovers!
Few regions can be identified so closely with one architect as the Veneto region with Andrea Palladio. His works, based on a detailed study of classical architecture, exerted exceptional influence on architectural and urban designs in many European countries, such as UK, and throughout the world. Thomas Jefferson, third US president, was Palladio's foremost American disciple and planned buildings such as The University of Virginia and his private residence in Monticello after studying the famouse treatise "The four books of architecture".
Discover three XVI century gems by Palladio: the Churches of the Redentore on Giudecca island, San Giorgio Maggiore on San Giorgio Island and San Francesco della Vigna: a deep jump into classical architecture.
You will enjoy an unforgettable bird's eye view of Venice from the top of San Giorgio Maggiore's belfry and a very nice walk through Castello district.
This is the perfect tour for architecture lovers!
From Saint Mark's square we will take vaporetto (public water taxi) and reach Giudecca island to visit the church of the Redeemer, commissioned to Palladio by the Republic to commemorate the end of the 1575/6 plague. You will learn about the most spectacular event of the year for Venetians, with fireworks and a procession on a very long pontoon bridge connecting the Giudecca island to Venice!
Then we will get on the public boat and get to the church of Saint George, built on the island of the same name, opposite Saint Mark's square. We will ascend the belfry and admire the magnificent view of Venice and its lagoon.
We will go back to Venice and go through Castello district- and admire the beautiful church of San Francesco della Vigna. You will fall in love with this quiet and genuine area of Venice, that most tourists miss!
Please note that on Sunday the church of Redentore is closed to the public. Contact me for a custom-made tour!
