Ancient Greece and italian food in the bay of Salerno
Paestum is the best preserved Greek archaeological site in the world.
The city was founded by the Greeks and later it was conquered by Rome.
The Romans made a lot of changes but they didn't modify the three biggest temples that were already centuries old at the time of the Roman conquest. After the fall of the Roman empire, the city declined and it was gradually abandoned. Its ruins have been hidden for centuries by a vast marshland that grew in the area and they were rediscovered in the 18th century.
Today, the archaeological park of Paestum (that comprises also a small but wonderful museum) is one of the most visited sites in Europe.
Paestum is historically a land of buffalo farming and also the birthplace of the best product to get from the buffalo milk: mozzarella. Visiting a buffalo farm and having a mozzarella based meal make an archaeological tour even better.
A walk in Paestum and a visit to a mozzarella farm let you experience beauty, culture and good food; the true spirit of Italy.
We meet at the meeting location agreed.
We drive to Paestum (about 1 hour away from Salerno and 1 hour and a half/2 hour from Naples, Sorrento and Amalfi Coast) and first we visit a buffalo farm.
The tour in the farming will be led by the staff of the cheese factory (the owner, the farm manager or a veterinarian) and it lasts approximately 45 minutes.
Later, we move to the archaeological park of Paestum to visit the ruins of the ancient city. We focus on the remains of the Greek period (the three massive temples, the tomb of the mythical founder and the building for the public meetings), on the Roman forum and on the artefacts on display in the little museum.
At the end of the tour in the archaeological park (duration about 2 hours and a half), we go back to the mozzarella farm for lunch.
After lunch, driving back to the drop-off point.
