Climb an active volcano with a private local guide
Pacaya volcano is the most visited in Guatemala because:
1. Its active.
2. When lava flows on the slopes, its one of the few places around the world where you can actually approach to a safe distance to take pictures and watch lava overnight.
3. The hike is relatively easy: a 3 hour round trip (3 1/2 miles total distance).
If you have specific transportation requirements, pricing inquiries or if your preferred start time isn't listed, please send me an email by clicking on the 'ASK A QUESTION' button that's listed on my tour page and profile. I will reply to you promptly. Thanks!
We'll pick you up at your hotel either in Guatemala City or Antigua, recommended time: 8:30 AM. Then we'll travel to the national park headquarters (1. 5 hours away on average), the hike begins in the village called San Francisco de Sales.
We'll hike through the park route to the main central plateau, passing through the forest on the northern slopes of the volcano until we arrive to the lava fields, we visit some remaining hot spots of the recent lava flows, there you can roast marshmallows with the underground heat.
Then we move to the western face of the volcano to a small hill named "Cerro Chino", from where you have an outstanding sight of the three volcanoes around Antigua (Agua, Fuego & Acatenango).
From there we return to the park entrance and drive to a restaurant 30 minutes away to eat lunch.
Optional: ask for the thermal pools (hot springs) package.
Total hiking time on average: 3 hours.
Total distance: 5 kilometers (3. 1 miles).

As much other highlands in Guatemala, the best season for climbing and hiking is the dry season (october-march).

Estimated Local Cash Needed
250 Quetzales - Per person. Take some Quetzales with you in case you want to buy a few snacks, hidration, fruit from the local stores or vendors. Local's also prepare meals for the end of the activity, so you can hire them when we start the hike to enjoy some good food when we get back to the park headquarters.
01 USD = 7.30 Quetzales, important advice: don't exchange your money at the airport, you get a better exchange rate at any local bank.

Our day long tour was fantastic. Nestor is incredibly knowledgeable and has an outstanding command of Mayan and Guatemalan history which he expertly weaves into the day. We had a last minute change to our schedule and he quickly accommodated us. Our day long tour included Antigua and volcanos, and throughout the tour he checked to be sure we were having fun. If you have a chance to visit this beautiful country you will love seeing it with Nestor. He is one of the best guides we've ever had. THANK YOU
