Climb an active volcano with a private local guide
Pacaya volcano is the most visited in Guatemala because:
1. Its active.
2. When lava flows on the slopes, its one of the few places around the world where you can actually approach to a safe distance to take pictures and watch lava overnight.
3. The hike is relatively easy: a 3 hour round trip (3 1/2 miles total distance).

We'll pick you up at your hotel either in Guatemala City or Antigua, recommended time: 8:30 AM. Then we'll travel to the national park headquarters (1. 5 hours away on average), the hike begins in the village called San Francisco de Sales.
We'll hike through the park route to the main central plateau, passing through the forest on the northern slopes of the volcano until we arrive to the lava fields, we visit some remaining hot spots of the recent lava flows, there you can roast marshmallows with the underground heat.
Then we move to the western face of the volcano to a small hill named "Cerro Chino", from where you have an outstanding sight of the three volcanoes around Antigua (Agua, Fuego & Acatenango).
From there we return to the park entrance and drive to a restaurant 30 minutes away to eat lunch.
Optional: ask for the thermal pools (hot springs) package.
Total hiking time on average: 3 hours.
Total distance: 5 kilometers (3. 1 miles).

Nestor was a great guide. He was informative and prepared. He explained many things to the kids about the volcano, rocks, and plants. He was very patient with my husband when he got long series of muscle cramps when we were on the way back down. I recommend him if you need English, have kids, or have the kind of health issues where you can hike the volcano but need to go at your own pace.
