Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride CO

Hike the magnificent San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado while learning about the local geology, alpine ecology and mining history. From your base in the historic mining town of Ouray, or Telluride, we will explore forests, meadows of wildflowers, hot springs, alpine tundra, extinct volcanoes and mineralized areas. Visits to Silverton for hiking are also possible depending upon your schedule.

Highlights
*Hike the high alpine meadows of Ice Lakes Basin and enjoy southern
Colorado's best wildflowers and volcanic scenery.
*Discover, via walking, the history of the Red Mountain Mining District, once a booming silver and gold mining area.
*Hike/climb Mt Sneffels in Yankee Boy Basin (one of Colorado's 14ers) or to Blue Lakes Pass at 13000'.

Activity Notes
Hiking 0-15 miles a day. Hiking elevations of 8, 000-14150 feet. Your activity level and interests will set the length and duration of the hikes on the tour. Many short "walk to a view point" type of hikes exist in this area.

Itinerary

I will meet you in Ouray, or Telluride, at your hotel or other designated site. Having prearranged our hikes prior to the start date, we will set off for our first destination of the day. Let's say that Bridge of Heaven is our first choice for hikes. Hiking the trail to Bridge of Heaven will elicit discussions as to the geology and natural history of the area. After about a 4 hour hike you will have reached the breathtaking view of the northern San Juan Mountain skyline. Another destination might be to climb/hike Mount Sneffels (a 14150' peak). This requires an early start to beat any summer afternoon rains. Yet another would be to take a walking tour of the Red Mountain Mining District to see old mine workings, ghost towns, and rail systems of the 1880s. Top that off with a tour of the Ouray County Historical Museum. These are just a few of the MANY itineraries we could create for you. Based upon your fitness and desires I will suggest and create a custom day for you and/or your group.

Meeting Location + Tour Duration

Meeting location: We will meet in a prearranged location and time in Ouray, CO. Another option is to meet in Montrose, CO and drive to your chosen hiking/sightseeing destination. Montrose is a larger town and I drive through it to get to Ouray.

End location: Ouray or Montrose, CO

Duration: 8 hours

Summer weather can change start times and dates as well as cause a stoppage of hiking, sightseeing, and climbing for safety reasons.

Transportation

I can take up to 4 people in my vehicle. More than 4 will require other arrangements at an increased fee. Or we could use your vehicle if it is larger and you have more people. The vehicle will be used to reach our various hiking and sightseeing destinations.

What’s Included

Other: All transportation and guiding are providing. I have some extra clothing and gear that can be borrowed.

Estimated Local Cash Needed

12 US dollars - You will need to provide your own lunch for the trail since we will not have access to food services when on trails.
