Leave the touristy track with a private guide
For a short time a competition and rivalry to Krakow, lost its significance especially in last 20 years. Tourists avoid it, locals try to move out but I will take you there!
Following the establishing of the People's Republic of Poland in 1945, the Communist authorities had encountered substantial resistance to their new regime from middle-class Cracovians. A referendum held by the authorities was soundly defeated by the people of Kraków - a major cause of embarrassment for the government. To "correct the class imbalance", the authorities commenced building a satellite industrial town to attract people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds to the region, such as peasants and the working class. What did they create? What did they destroy? How did it influence the region? How does the socialist realism architecture look like? All of the above and more you will learn during a very serious tour to Nowa Huta district.
•Cistercian Abbey and St. Bartholomew church (from outside).
•Wanda Mound - assumed to be the resting place of the legendary princess Wanda,
•Central Square (today Ronald Reagan Square) in the very heart of Nowa Huta, near which an enormous statue of the city's patron - V. Lenin - used to stand, chance to see characteristic architecture of '40 and '50 periods,
•steelworks - now owned by the ArcelorMittal, which closed its gates for visitors, but you will be still able to understand its size and see its elegant architecture of administrative buildings,
•visit to the Museum of History of Nowa Huta Quarter - a little exhibition about how the region looked like before (closed on Monday),
•visit to the "Lord's Ark" - the first church in Nowa Huta,
•a shot of typical booze in a popular bar from the communist era.
