Four of New York's five boroughs are either islands or on an island. The Bronx is the only one attached to the mainland, but still surrounded on three sides by water. New York's shore line is 578 miles long. The city maintains 14 miles of ocean front beaches. You can go surfing in three of the five boroughs and deep sea fishing from all five.
Water has always played an important role in New York, from the days of Native Americans harvesting shellfish from the harbor; to the fur trapping trade of the 1600's; to the 1700's War of Revolution; through the hay day of the Erie Barge Canal in the 1800's; to the peak of the Brooklyn Naval Yard during World Wars I & II; and still today, water plays an important role in both economic and recreational life here.
Using commuter ferries on this tour, we explore the geography, history, architecture and life of New York from from the water. We get off the ferries at different islands and in neighborhoods around the rivers and harbor to explore, learn and have fun
-Roosevelt Island (Queens) - beautiful views of the mid-town Manhattan skyline
-Williamsburg South (Brooklyn) - the largest community of ultra-conservative Jews outside of Isreal
-South Street Seaport (Manhattan) - some of the oldest architecture in the city, including the largest concentration of restored early 19th-century commercial buildings
-DUMBO & Brookln Bridge Park (Brooklyn) - great views of the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges
-Governor's Island (Manhattan, but closer to Brooklyn) - closest frontal views across water of the Statue of Liberty from land
Needless to say, I connect the dots of history and time as we move from location to location on the ferries. We will see:
-the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument in Brooklyn, in honor of the more than 11, 500 Americans left to die on 16 prison ship anchored in the East River during the American Revolution;
-the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, United Nations, "Billonaires Tower, " CitiBank, Bank of America; One World Trade, and more
