An Epicurean Tour of Nerac
We will venture into the Aquitaine region, the southern edge of the Lot-et-Garonne départment, to the utterly charming village of Nerac which lies on both sides of the Baïse River. The saturday market here draws people from near and far. Nerac was the home of King Henri IV of France of the Albret dynasty. The remains of his impressive chateau are a museum located in the center of the village, surrounded by beautiful examples of colombage, regionally distinct, half-timbered, buildings. Arriving early, we will sample delicious pastries and coffee on the corner terrace of the best patisserie in town, then either set off on a leisurely stroll through the market stalls or cross the river to the Parc Royal de la Garenne, once a royal hunting ground and the inspirational setting for Shakespeare's "Love's Labours Lost. " We will then choose to go a little bit further to the 12th century village of Vianne (an almost perfectly preserved fortified bastide) for lunch or dine in the village of Condom at Café Cordeliers.
I will either pick you up at your hotel, rental or gite within a 10 km radius, at 9 a. m. , or meet you at the clock tower in the center of the village. We will then have coffee, tea or pastries, afterwards wandering the wonderful farmers' market. If there's time before lunch we might decide to walk through Henri VI's Chateau or cross the Baïse River to the Parc Garenne. Our next stop will be lunch in the village of Vianne with a tour of this beautiful bastide village or lunch in the village of Condom and a tour afterwards. I will offer many suggestions for the rest of the afternoon depending upon how adventurous you are.
