The Golden Age of Discoveries
Belém is a must visit. It is a trip to the glorious past of the portuguese maritime expansion.
The most impressive symbol of this era is without a doubt the magnificent Monastery of Saint Jerome, built on the location from where Vasco da Gama set sail to discover the sea route to India. The beach that saw him depart is his burial ground nowadays.
Not far is another important symbol of the city, the Tower of Belém, a jewel of the manueline art and of tremendous importance because of its defense purposes.
We will learn about the voyages of exploration and envision the routes of the portuguese in a world map on the floor as we admire the statues of the most prominent personalities represented at the Monument to the Discoveries. If time allows we won't miss the famous bakery for the custard tarts of Belém.
On mondays the monuments in Belém are closed so we can only see the Tower and Monastery from the outside.
