Let's enjoy the traditional version of Japan
It's not the only geisha district left in Japan, but Gion, a collection of streets defined by its old wooden buildings is by far the most famous. Spend an hour wandering the area and chances are you'll glimpse a geiko or maiko (the name of geisha goes by in Kyoto) shuffling between teahouses, where they are working, in their cumbersome zori sandals and exquisite kimono.
Not that Gion is just about geisha. The area is also known for its numerous restaurants that serve traditional Japanese food/sweets, and traditional merchant houses called machiya.
Many of the streets that run through the area have been able to preserve many of the machiya from back in the day, giving the area a very traditional atmosphere and makes for a great stroll.
