Toji Temple was a state-sponsored temple originally built in 796 to guard the city.
It is home to a lot of national treasures, including five buildings such as the five-Story Pagoda, whose height was the limitation of buildings in Kyoto because it is the highest pagoda in Japan, the Kondo (the main temple building), and the Goeido (hall dedicated to the founder of the Buddhist sect), where Kukai resided, Kanch-in Temple (sub-temple), as well as the eight areas with 21 Buddha sculptures, paintings and crafts.
Sanjusangendo was built by the order of the retired Emperor Goshirakawa in 1164.
The main temple building completed in 1266 is the longest wooden structure in Japan.
What are famous there are the orderly lined 1, 001 wooden standing statues of Senju Kannon.
FUSHIMI-INARI Shrine: Fushimi Inari is noted for its remarkable sight of some 10, 000 small torii (shrine gates) that arch over a long path up the hill behind the shrine.
SANJUSANGENDO: the main temple building completed in 1266 is the longest wooden structure in Japan. Several buildings are designated as National Treasures.
