The synagogue of Casale Monferrato and Jewish heritage of Turin
Casale hides one of the most beautiful synagogues of Northern Italy. It was built and partially decorated in the 16th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries the Jewish community embellished it with precious woods and gold. In 1968 the synagogue was completely restored. Today the synagogue isn't regularly used but it opens for visits and special events.
The Museum of Lights is located underground, in the former oven for the Matzot, and shows a collection of contemporary art Channukkiot started in 1994.
The Jewish Art and History Museum (or Silver's Museum) is located in the former women gallery of the synagogue. It hosts an extraordinary collection of judaica, particularly silver cerimonial objects and embroideries.
The tours continues to Turin, which symbol is the Mole Antonelliana: this huge building (167, 50 mts - 550 ft high) was originally commissioned by the local Jewish community to the architect Alessandro Antonelli to be a monumental synagogue. It now hosts the Museum of Cinema.
The tour starts from Lake Maggiore, any accommodation in Arona, Stresa or Baveno.
After a 90min drive approx (motorway), we'll reach Casale Monferrato, in the hilly region south of the Lakes District.
The tour continues to the city of Turin (1h45min drive): we'll see the Mole Antonelliana from the outside, discover the city centre with its beautiful monuments and walk as far as the block of the ancient ghetto.
The drive back lasts a couple of hours.
