The city provides a glimpse into the private lives of the romans. It is a small italic town with an orthogonal grid patter of streets. It is located at the foot of Mt Vesuvius, just 4 miles south from Naples and 7 miles north from Pompeii. The town was quite small as the total area within the enclosure was of 20 hectares, with a population of about 3000 inhabitants.
Herculaneum and Pompeii are also called the "sisters cities"; the first is much smaller but better preserved. While Pompeii had been covered in four to five meters of ashes, an avalanche of muds about 20 meters thick had buried Herculaneum.
Second stories, carbonized wooden objects, intact paintings and mosaics are still preserved. My explanation will make the city come to life.

Giancarlo guided us in the 'Classic Tour' of Herculaneum lasting 3 hours. He is an archaeologist with an obvious passion for, and extensive knowledge' of, his subject together with an attractive way of picking out, describing and explaining the remains which he showed us. He is an excellent guide who speaks excellent English. I strongly recommend him to anyone who wishes to come away from Herculaneum with a deep understanding (rather than a mere superficial touristic view) of the remains.
