The pearls of the Ionian coast

A day to discover the pearls of the Ionian coast. The "Greek beautiful colony" of Gallipoli with its fishing port, the old town surrounded by fortified walls and protected by the castle, the lavish baroque cathedral, the small jewel of Chiesa della Purità with a Luca Giordano's painting, an underground olive oil mill entirely carved in the stone and dating back to the 17th century when lamp olive oil once produced and exported throughout Europe.
Nardò and its Piazza Salandra (one of the most beautiful Baroque square in italy), the authentic historic city center, the cathedral and San Domenico church.
Last but not least Galatina (called the Assisi of Puglia) with the palaces of the historic city center, the Basilica of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria (a beautiful example of Gothic architecture in the Salento area) with its astonishing frescos. Galatina is also a symbol of tarantism and pizzica (a traditional dance) and of the Pasticciotto (that should have been invented by Ascalone's pastry shop).

Itinerary

We can start the tour from Gallipoli as well as from Nardò, Galatina, Lecce or somewhere else.
The itinerary can be modify with a visit to Copertino (and its castle) or enjoying the Ionian coast and its wide sandy beaches (i. e. Punta Prosciutto), the coastal watching towers, the liberty style villas, the fishmongers of Porto Cesareo, the breathtaking views of the seaside from the cliffs of the Natural Park of Porto Selvaggio, the ghost village of Monteruga, the Monks' Salt Marsh with pink flamingos, the Museum of Memory and Welcome of Santa Maria del Bagno with the memories of this post World War II displaced person camp which guests 150000 Jews from 1943 to 1947. There are several tasty options: a visit (winery, olive oil bar, cheesefarm) with tasting (wine, extra-virgin olive oil, cheese), a seafood lunch in front of the seaside or the unique culinary experience of a menu made with fish cold cuts "created" by the young and passionate chef of a small family run restaurant in the surroundings of Gallipoli.
