Dig into Coimbra history visiting its Museums
Coimbra history is well preserved in its museums. They are not only storages for antiques but mirror the life and the different moments of the city evolution. If your idea of a Museum is a closed, monotonous building, you're not definitely thinking about Coimbra.
There are 2 different itineraries: from Tuesday to Friday, from Tuesday to Sunday and that's what we're going to do: walk inside a Roman gallery whose vaulting supported the city forum; enter in one the most beautiful libraries in the world, covered in gold; go around a cloister of the 12th century; get to know the "ethnography" of the students life / visit the first Portuguese Museum of Science; go inside a monastery that was underwater for more than 400 years.
Note: Coimbra city centre has 500 square meters and the best way to visit it is by walking. We won't need a car.
Visit to the following:
- University & Library;
- Academic Museum / Museum of Science;
- Machado de Castro Museum;
- Santa Clara-a-Velha ruins
Note: please note that most museums are closed on Monday. However, it is possible to create an alternative itinerary
