The etruscan past is one of the most fascinating chapters of Italian history. They can be considered the cultural ancestors of the Romans. This day takes you to discover three towns on the border between Tuscany, Umbria and Latium: Orvieto, Cività di Bagnoregio and Bolsena.
Orvieto is often considered the religious capital of the Etruscans; its late medieval Duomo is one of the most spectacular churches of Europe.
Cività di Bagnoregio is a tiny village on a tufa rock that can only be reached walking over a pedestrian bridge. The entrance gate - cut out of the solid rock - seems to date back to the third century BC.
We also spend some time in the quiet Bolsena close to its idyllic lake, and spend the afternoon discovering the catacombs of Saint Cristina.
After a walking tour in Orvieto - about two hours - we drive to Cività di Bagnoregio (20 miles) and discover one of Italy's most remarkable hilltop towns. After a brief lunch, we continue our journey to Bolsena (20 miles).
We return to Orvieto in the late afternoon (25 miles).

Werner was an amazing guide and we thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Orvieto and Civita are my favorites. He arranged when we visited each place to optimize ability to view without many crowds. He appeared quite knowledgeable about many topics and seemed quite authentic in saying when something was an opinion and factual items. We highly recommend him.
