Real life experience.
The origin of the name dates back to the slums of the early twentieth century, when a devotee of Santa Marta took a "image" of it to the top of the hill. In 1930, a chapel was built to protect the image. The land belonged to the nearby St. Ignatius, which now allow some of their employees were living on the hillside, giving rise to the current favela.
Recently, the favela has been undergoing a process of urbanization. There were built several popular houses, sewage, water piping and installation of electrical cables. One of the most important works done in recent years in Dona Marta was the construction of a cable car that facilitates the transport of residents to higher areas of the hill.
Dona Marta was the setting for international events as part of the clip of "They Don't Care About Us" by Michael Jackson (1996) and the film Fast and Fast & Furious 5.
The tour takes the visitor to the community of Santa Marta, the most well-known favela in Brazil. Placed within the rich neighborhood of Botafogo.
In Santa Marta, we make a walking trip through its narrow alleyways and trails, get a good idea of its local initiatives that are also part of many Rio favelas. Once inside, the contrasts are more evident as much as we go higher and deeper inside. Its huge dimensions and breathtaking view from the top is certainly impressive for any visitor.
