goree and city tour

See as much of Dakar as you want in just one day. For your first visit to Dakar, you probably want to see the main attractions to find out what makes Dakar such a great place to visit and live. We start with GOREE. A small tiny island with a violent past. It also served as a base for slaves between the 15th through the 18th century. A very emotional place to experience the dark side of Humanity with the subjugation of one race against another.
GOREE island was a major departure point in the African Slave Trade. My informative lecture on Goree History will give you a real sense of why this African Sanctuary is the most visited place in the country.
After lunch, board the 2. 00 PM Ferry back to Dakar and proceed for a 3-hour city tour of Dakar. As we tour around the Capital City, you will not only see wonderful Sites and impressive Monuments but you will also hear great stories related to these places.
I will show you all the highlights that make DAKAR a city unlike any other major cities in West Africa.

Itinerary

Leave Hotel after breakfast for the ferry station and board the 10. 00 AM ferry to GOREE island. A 20 minute ride will take us to the last place African Slaves saw before being deported to American destinations never to return.
After a brief presentation of the Island's History, we will proceed to the the Door-of-no-return in the SLAVE HOUSE for a detailed and informative lecture on Slavery from an African perspective.
Also visit the French style Catholic church and the historical Museum.
After lunch, board the 2. 00 PM ferry back to Dakar and proceed for a 3-hour city tour of Dakar including: the Independence Square-the Presidential Palace-the Cathedral of Dakar-the Grand Mosque-The gate of the 3rd Millenium-the Dakar University and the Statue of the African Renaissance, the tallest in Africa.
Also, visit the largest Arts and Crafts market for items of souvenir and soak up the city tour's atmosphere.

A Recent Review of this tour

Oumar is an absolute saint. His English is perfect and he may as well be the mayor of Dakar. He knows everybody and everyone and always gets to yes. That, coupled with his rich historical honest understanding of his country makes him the perfect guide. He is well worth the money and quite frankly the only way to see Dakar whether you're a solo traveler or a family of four. His recollections about spending 10yrs in Chicago are fascinating as well. Book him early and often!
