Hear compelling stories of Tasmania's convict history and marvel at coastal landscapes and the very impressive Tasman Peninsula
Take a journey back almost 200 years ago when Tasmania was known as Van Diemen's Land; a time when convicts were transported from Britain to settle a new colony.
On this tour you will travel to the Tasman Peninsula, visit the world heritage listed Port Arthur Historic Site - in a bygone era, a male convict settlement site. Hear stories about the harrowing life of convicts as they served time for their crimes and wander around the sandstone ruins and magnificently refurbished historic buildings.
You will spend the afternoon exploring the coastal landscape of impressive sea cliffs, natural rock formations and hear an overview of a fascinating geological history - I'll take you to see the highlights and stop at lookouts for awe-inspiring views - and we'll keep an eye out for birds and wildlife too.
As time permits, you may like to visit the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo (additional cost applies) for a chance to see a Tasmanian Devil.
Departing Hobart, it's a 1. 5 hour journey to Port Arthur. We'll stop enroute so you can marvel a awe-inspiring views of the rugged coastline and learn about unique was used to stop potential escapees from the convict settlement.
You will spend 2. 5 to 3 hours exploring Port Arthur's historic ruins and restored colonial homes (of which there are more than 30) on an fully guided interpretive walk and a cruise on the harbour taking you closer to the 'Isle of the Dead' - you'll be sure to gain an understanding of the life of a convict.
After lunch (at your choice of my recommendations), we'll visit the natural attractions of the peninsula. Marvel at ancient rock formations and the highest sea cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere - all shaped by wind, wave action and tidal currents.
The amount of time spent at Port Arthur, and the time by which we must return to Hobart (especially important for cruise ship shore excursions), will determine the amount of time you have for leisurely walks along the nature trails.

Despite unseasonably hot weather, we had an amazing day touring with Careena in Port Arthur. Her knowledge and commentary helped us get so much more out of this historic site than we ever could have gotten wandering around on our own. In addition, she took us to many beautiful coastline features on our full-day tour and it was such a treat to ride in her room, ultra-clean and comfy vehicle. Like many other guides she really helps you get the most out of your holiday. Highly highly recommended
