Learn about Russia today through a tour of contemprorary art, architecture and modern cuisine

This full day walking tour is designed to show how 20th century politics shaped St Petersburg as a modern city. It takes you to hidden Soviet monuments and modern sights within historical center, and tells you how the Western globalization trends find their ways in the second largest city of post-Soviet Russia.

We also have a close look at present-day local cuisine which have little to do with "borshch", or "beef stroganoff", but rather is a motley mixture of French and Dutch influences, complimented by flavors of former Soviet republics of Central Asia and Caucasus. You'll learn how vodka, considered today a Russian national drink, in fact originated from the state monopoly on liqueurs, and get acquainted with more traditional drinks and food Russians themselves prefer.

To round up the tour, we visit Museum of Political History with its broad perspective on modern politics or if you prefer to learn the same through the artists' eyes - major collection of modern art at Russian Museum.

Sample of itinerary:

10:00-13:00 a walking tour of central St Petersburg and the islands' area, including hidden small galleries, independent bookshops and Soviet antiques, and creative art spaces with a visit to a local farmers' market with an introduction to regional food products. You may add a subway ride with a few exquisitely decorated Soviet metro stations to this part of the tour

13:00-14:00 lunch at an authentic place which the Russians themselves would choose to go: either street-food or decent regional cuisine restaurant

14:00-18:00 Political History Museum OR 20th Century Russian Art Collection at the Russian Museum + a couple of building revealing trends in contemporary architecture and interior design in Russia

The tour could be tailored according to your interests and the events scheduled at the venues themselves. Please, feel free to contact me to discuss the details.

A Recent Review of this tour

Vladimir was a fantastic guide! He is a true scholar of history and really made it come alive for us. He’s also very flexible and adapted the tour to our needs, teaching us about everything from Renaissance art to the proper way to drink vodka! He’s very approachable and fun, and we were really pleased that we chose him as a guide.
