Nijo Castle, Kitano Shrine, Old Imperial Palace, Heian Shrine, Gion
This Private tour includes Emperor and Shogun related buildings such as Old Imperial Palace, Nijo Castle and Heian Shrine.
We start the tour with Nijo Castle which was built by Shogun Tokugawa in 1603.
The Shogun is the title given by Emperor to a warlord who ruled over Japan.
This Castle is for the Shogun to stay when he came up to Kyoto Edo.
Shogun lived in Edo which is the old name of Tokyo.
The Old Emperial Palace is located just 1 km northeast of Nijo Castle where Emperors lived for 5 centuries.
Now that this Palace is open for public by Government, entry here is free.
Kitano Shrine is in the north of Nijo Castle.
This is the Shinto shrine to enshrine a famous Sugawara Michizane who was a scholar lived in 10th century.
Although Shogun lived and had government in Edo (old name of Tokyo), he needed a castle in Kyoto to stay and control west Japan.
