English (fluent)

Let a 4th-generation Charlestonian walk you through the city's history, architecture and culture!

While exploring quiet alleys as well as busy streets, you'll see the beauty that is the Charleston of today while hearing about its fascinating past.
You'll walk along the same streets, see the same buildings, and hear some of the same sounds that have been a part of Charleston for 300 years.
You'll learn about the customs that are so special to our residents and the stories told to me by my relatives long-gone. We'll dip into important public buildings and peer into antiquated churchyards.
We'll stop to visit the interior of a lovely mansion that was once home to some of Charleston's aristocracy and now serves as a historic house museum.
As we meander through the city, you'll begin to share my passion for a place, a history and a culture that has been part of my family for more than 160 years.

Based upon your interests, I will determine specific stops and streets for strolling. However, most tours will included The Battery (aka White Point Garden), Rainbow Row, Stoll's Alley, Tradd Street, King Street, Broad Street, Church Street, Dock Street Theater, City Market, Washington Park, Meeting Street, St. Michael's Church, St. Philip's Church, and the French Huguenot Church. There will also be a tour of the interior of a historic house museum. The pace is very leisurely and we can stop and rest if necessary.

Meeting Location + Tour Duration

Meeting location: We will meet in the heart of the historic district at a time and place that is convenient for you.

End location: We will finish up at a historic house museum where a museum docent will take over and complete your tour. From there, you are within easy walking distance to where we began our tour. Or you may wish to visit one of the great restaurants nearby, since you will undoubtedly have worked up an appetite.

Duration: 4 hours

What’s Included

In this four-hour walking tour, admission to a historic house museum for up to four people is included.

What’s Extra

The cost of meals, snacks and beverages is not included, although we can stop and grab a bite to take along if you wish.

A Recent Review of this tour

We thoroughly enjoyed our Charleston 101 tour with Mary Coy. Mary is extremely knowledgeable, well-spoken and friendly. The fact that Mary is from Charleston, as are her relatives, was especially helpful as she had much local knowledge as well as being able to include stories told to her by family members. We plan on visiting Charleston again in the near future and will definitely book another tour with Mary. We were so impressed with her that we have ordered some of her books on Charleston.
