In the 18th century, Charleston's wealth was legendary. Most of that wealth was in the hands of the rice planters. We'll visit Middleton Place, the most stately of all the local plantations. Not only will you gaze upon and stroll through the lovely gardens modeled after the finest in Europe, but you'll learn about the production of Carolina Gold, the crop that earned its nickname through the prosperity it brought to those who grew it. You'll discover the extensive and sophisticated process of rice production brought to the Lowcountry by Africans in the early 1700s. Then we'll drive back to the city for a walking tour of the historic downtown area where many planters had their city homes. You'll learn about the culture, architecture and history of one of the most significant (and beautiful) cities in America.
The tour will begin with our driver picking us up in the city and heading to the plantation, about a 25 minute drive into the country. Along the way, I'll give you background information about the area and sites along the scenic drive. We'll spend about 2 hours exploring the plantation, as I guide you through the magnificent landscaped gardens as well as the path following the beautiful Ashley River and picturesque flooded rice fields. When we return to the city, our driver will leave us in one of the most beautiful areas for strolling. We'll amble for close to an hour before wrapping up the tour at a place that is most convenient for you.

Mary C. is the consummate guide for Charleston and the plantations. Our party was extremely pleased with this tour and the extra effort she made to make it happen. We have never been disappointed with Tours By Locals. As a native of Charleston, she brought an extra dimension to the tour and made the facts come to life.
