Cook and eat like the locals...did 50 years ago
Cretan mom's cooking. Cook with a local housewife and taste the real thing. An all-original culinary experience, with home-grown products. Bake in the traditional stone oven and enjoy a meal made the same way as when the term "food industry" didn't exist.
There's nothing pretentious or artificial or hastily-done here. Cheese from the milk of "happy goats" in the small stable and eggs from chickens that go around freely in the barn. The olive oil is family produced, and most of the times the vegetables as well. The bread is baked in the stone oven a few hours before, and the "yemista" (rice-stuffed vegetables), the "boureki" (zucchini, with potatoes and "mizithra" fresh cheese), a goat roast in the oven, as well as the local "kalitsounakia" (small pies, with mizithra, or vegetables or both) are prepared then and there with you as the "sous chef". Local wine and desserts conclude this magnificent experience.
If you want to eat locally, it doesn't get more true and tasty and pure than this.
From your place of lodging within the greater Chania area or the port for Shore Excursions, to the hosts' house for the preparation of the meal, then some quick visits to important nearby locations while the meal is being cooked, return to the house to taste all the recipes and finally back to where you were picked up.
**Since this is a food tour it would be great if you informed me in advance about any special dietary preferences. The menu can be amended to match what you want. (vegetarian, vegan, etc. ).
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: We will pick you up with our driver from wherever you reside within the greater Chania area or from the port if it's a Shore Excursion for you. If you haven't booked a hotel yet, please contact me when you've done so through ToursByLocals.
When we meet, and as with most tours, a Liability Waiver will have to be signed by the participants. I can provide you with a digital copy so that you have ample time to read it before our meeting, during which I will also provide the hard copies to be signed.
End location: The tour ends where it started unless you prefer another location. I could provide you with suggestions on what to do next depending on your tastes.
Duration: 5 hours 30 min.
This is the approximate duration from pick-up to drop-off. Obviously, in the end, you will enjoy your traditional raki (Cretan liquor) and your dessert without any rush. There's no pushing things here.
On another issue, this is an "all-weather" tour. Better outdoors, but the meal and preparation can also be organized inside.

First of all we want to thank Costas and the Thanassis family for the AMAZING hospitality! My husband and I had such a great time, it felt like visiting close family. We were talking, laughing and sharing our cultures with each other, language was not a barrier. They made sure I had a hands on experience and shared with me their recipes which I've brought home and already tried on my own! The food was delicious, fresh and made with love. This is not just a tour... it's a priceless experience
