Tulips! Where and When to see Holland's Best Blooms

(back to blog)

While the January skies may be dreary and grey, just beneath the soil, bursts of red, purple, yellow and pink are waiting to burst forth once spring arrives. Have you ever been to the Netherlands during tulip blooming time? Make 2014 the year you witness this spectacle of nature! Our Dutch guide Stefka explains where and when to find Holland’s best blooms.

The bright colors of the flowering bulbs of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths are a unique and amazing sight in Holland during the spring. The bright red, yellow and pink colors are overwhelming and will dazzle your senses. A must see, or even better, a must experience!

De Keukenhof Tulip Gardens
Keukenhof is an unforgettable experience for people of all ages and undoubtedly one of the most famous attractions in The Netherlands. In this historic park with an area of 32 hectares, in fall about 7 million tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and other spring bulbs are all planted by hand. The floral displays you can see in the park and the unique flower shows in the various pavilions. The world famous Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse are opened from mid-March until mid-May: only 8 weeks a year.

Flower Fields
The best-known bulb-growing area is the Bollenstreek near Leiden, home of the world-famous Keukenhof. But most of the tulip farms in Holland are located in the Noordoostpolder (Northeast polder), in the province of Flevoland. The area north from Amsterdam, known as the Kop van Noord-Holland boasts the largest continuous bulb-growing area in Holland. All three of these areas are only half an hour away from Amsterdam by car.

How to visit the tulip fields
There are many different ways to enjoy the tulip fields. You can see them: walking on foot, from an airplane, hop on a bicycle, take a boat ride, from a historical steam tram and of course on a sightseeing drive by car.

Best time to see the tulips
The best time to see the tulips depends each year on Mother Nature. Has there been a warm winter? The flowers will bloom early. With a long cold winter, the flowers will bloom late. This being said: from April 15th until May 10th, there are always fields with tulips in bloom to see.

See flowers outside tulip season
Are you unable to travel in tulip season? Not to worry! All through the year you can enjoy the sight of flowers in The Netherlands. Visit the largest flower auction of the world in Aalsmeer. Enjoy the amazing parades in the weekends of August & September with dahlia decorated wagons. Have you heard of Rose Village Lottum? Stroll through the historical Botanical gardens or visit an orchid & butterfly farm.
