ToursByLocals Top 10 Winter Destinations

(back to blog)

The glow of summer is fading across much of North America and Europe, and many savvy travellers are enjoying cooler days and less crowded attractions in popular cities like Paris, Amsterdam and Barcelona. But where are our travellers planning to go a few months from now, when the days are short and cold in the Northern hemisphere?

We took a look at our winter bookings for the last few years to find the answer. Some of you hardy souls are still hitting places like Rome, Tokyo and New York City in the winter, but ToursByLocals travellers in search of warmer climes have ten clear favourite places:

1. Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
This year is going to be busier than ever in Rio! The Summer Olympics will be drawing record crowds to the city, and of course Carnival is always wildly popular. Whenever you go, our guides here will go out of their way to make sure you feel warmly welcomed.

2. Buenos Aires, Argentina
Our team of guides in Buenos Aires receive unfailingly positive reviews, no doubt in part because of how proud they are of their beautiful, cosmopolitan city. From tango lessons to days spent learning to be a “gaucho”, there is much to do in and around Buenos Aires.

3. Dubai, UAE
Perched on the edge of a dune-strewn desert, with architectural feats including man-made islands and gravity-defying skyscrapers, Dubai is truly one-of-a-kind. Our guides can introduce you to the cultural and natural marvels of this unusual city.

4. Mexico City
Steeped in layers of pre-hispanic, colonial and modern day arts and culture, Mexico City blesses adventurous travelers with a wealth of history to explore. Our guides here display astounding amounts of expertise; make sure you take advantage!

5. Bangkok, Thailand
On the surface chaotic and overwhelming, Bangkok is definitely a city best discovered (and soon loved!) with a knowledgeable guide, who can show you around the teeming city and take you on day excursions beyond its borders.

6. Hong Kong
Be bold! This is a big city, so be ready for some big fun, and to have an excellent time exploring its energetic cultural scene with your guide. Foodies take note: the Cantonese food in Hong Kong makes for fabulous feasting opportunities – especially with a knowledgeable guide!

7. Bali, Indonesia
Just saying the word “Bali” puts us in a relaxed frame of mind. But adventure can also be on the docket here: think an early morning trek to watch the sun rise over the rim of a volcanic crater… your guide here can cater to any interest, cultural or adventurous.

8. Singapore
Singapore is an intoxicating blend of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western cultures all wrapped up in a tidy package that stands out from any other Asian city. There’s something for everyone, whether your tastes run to a Singapore Sling at the Raffles bar, or noodles at a local night market.

9. San Juan, Puerto Rico
Founded in 1521, San Juan is the second-oldest colonial city in the Americas. There is much to discover with a local guide: mesmerizing forts, cathedrals, Spanish architecture and a lively Old Town – plus excursions to nearby beaches and rainforests. Our guides here love their island and are eager to share it with you.

10. Auckland, New Zealand
Compact, yet exceedingly diverse, many beautiful parts of New Zealand can be explored as day trips from Auckland. Glow-worm caves, wineries, coastline, volcanoes and hot springs will make you wonder why we don’t all pack up and live with the Kiwis.
