Seville is the warmest place of Europe to spend these winter holidays. Streets are lively and full during the 3 week holiday period, non-stop, and the air is sweet. The Christmas program "Alumbra" (lightning up), which will fill the coming weeks and until the Day of the Kings the life of the whole city with life and light, will start a couple days before Christmas Eve. These activities will again focus on children and families and also on the dissemination of culture, coinciding with the end of the Murillo Year (400 anniversary of the famed baroque Sevillan painter) in the city and the beginning of the memory of the first circumnavigation of the world, which will be two of the great protagonists of these Christmas days. In total, there are more than 80 activities throughout the city!
On the Plaza de San Francisco there will be a show with light and sound: the three crowns of the three Wise Men, to which citizens will have access to its interior, and which will offer a show of light and sound every half hour. The shows take place every half hour from 19:00 to 22:00 every day. As part of the unique lighting, the Luces de Barrio project, which is celebrating its fourth edition, will return to the city. On this occasion, the project will be dedicated to the V centenary of the first circumnavigation of the world by the Magellan expedition. The initiative will take place over Christmas in the Alcázar Palace, a UNESCO-listed site.
This Christmas closes the Murillo Year, so we will find the best known and most successful event held as part of the Performing Arts Program, and the event will regain its importance during the celebrations. The drama Los Niños de Murillo ́(The Murillo Players) is broadcast free of charge on the façade of the Casino de la Exposición. It will be a representation of Murillo's works with the main elements of the Sevillian painter. It will be shown three times a day (26, 27, 28, 29, 30 December and 2 and 3 January).
There will be also open-air events, shows in emblematic places of the city such as the Real Alcázar and the Fábrica de Artillería, as well as the traditional nativity scenes that fill these days with anticipation and magic. Come and join us as we celebrate the Christmas season in Seville!
