We Round Up Summer 2016's "Hottest" Destinations

(back to blog)

Curious where the most popular travel destinations were this summer? Over 20,000 travellers took ToursByLocals tours from June to August, and we’ve tabulated the data to find out exactly where we sold the most tours. Not surprisingly, the top spots are all in the Northern Hemisphere, where sunny days abounded, festival season was in full swing and our guides welcomed travellers with open arms.

Here are our 12 most popular destinations for the summer of 2016!

Paris: The perennial favourite never disappoints. Bienvenue to the magical City of Lights!

Rome: Most popular Roman activity to indulge in this summer? Cooling off with a creamy gelato.

Barcelona: This beautiful coastal Spanish city continues to climb closer to the top of our lists each year.

Tokyo: Whether on a layover or staying longer, travellers benefit enormously from engaging a local guide in the Japanese capital.

Prague: Come for the famous astronomical clock – stay for the city’s undeniable charm.

Kyoto: The wealth of traditional Japanese culture on display makes Kyoto a year-round favourite.

Florence: Florence’s art will always draw culture hounds to its galleries, museums and public squares.

San Francisco: The only North American city to make the list, it shouldn’t come as a surprise: San Fran positively sparkles in summer.

Athens: Can’t mess with a classic. Athens and its surroundings remain a draw for travellers in search of ancient history (and divine Greek food.)

Venice: The third Italian city in the top ten can get crowded: our local guides specialize in showing travellers Venetian charm away from the masses.

London: Layers upon layers of British history blended with irresistible pop culture (and those adorable Royal children) make London an ever-popular choice.

Dubrovnik: Game of Thrones only served to boost awareness of Dubrovnik’s attractive old town and coastal charm.
