Earthquake in Japan

(back to blog)

We woke up this morning to news of the disaster that struck Japan just hours ago. Much like the waves of the Tsunami, news of this sort travels fast, and there are probably few people in North America who are unaware of the devastation the Japanese people now face in the wake of the worst quake to hit Japan in a century.

It was barely two weeks ago that we were sending messages out to our guides in Christchurch, New Zealand, as they dealt with the aftermath of a 6.3 earthquake leveling much of their fine city. Thankfully all our guides in that city are OK, although coping with the anxiety of aftershocks has put many people on edge.

This morning our thoughts are with Eric, Chie, Izumi, Hideaki and Yumi, our guides in Tokyo, about 300km from the epicentre of the 8.9 quake that struck Japan's North East. We hope with all our hearts that they and their loved ones are safe, and we wish them strength as they deal with the aftermath of this disaster in the days and weeks to come.
