Five Reasons to Visit Barcelona - now more than ever

(back to blog)

Last week’s attack in Barcelona is – tragically – more of the same kind of senseless violence that Europe has witnessed multiple times in recent years. France, Germany, England…the citizens of these countries have all demonstrated hope, strength and love in the face of inhuman acts.

Today our guide Lydia in Barcelona joins us to talk about Catalan spirit – and five reasons why you should visit Barcelona now.

I’ve been intending to write something about Barcelona for some time in order to encourage you to visit my lovely city, but I haven’t done… As you can understand, life gets busy with work and family. But now I really feel the need to express myself after the recent attack, because I’m not scared, we are not scared and you should not be scared.

Why should you come visit us?

Because Barcelona is one of the greatest destinations in Europe!

On ToursByLocals you can check my profile and you will find tours about:

•Modernist architecture that defines the modern city of Barcelona
•The iconic works of Antoni Gaudi
•Downtown, Gothic District with 2000 years of history
•A beautiful seafront with refreshing beaches
•Wonderful Museums
•The Barcelona Futbol Club
•Amazing religious sites like Montserrat or Girona…

Because Barcelona is a very safe city.

The Catalan Police (they are called Mossos d’Esquadra) have been very professional and they have solved and dismantled the terrorist group that operated the attack in Barcelona in one week. Being for many years under the threat of ETA, a Basque Country terrorist group that operated all over Spain during Franco’s dictatorship and 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, made our police force one that is full of competent professionals and very efficient against terrorism.

Because the people from Barcelona are supportive.

The solidarity between the locals and visitors was very important in order to take care of the victims during the first moments of the Ramblas attack. Taxi drivers were driving for free during the evening of the attack. The hotels were accommodating tourists with no charge. The locals start going to hospitals to donate blood until it reached the point where there were too much people, and they asked the people to go home.

Because the Muslim community are in solidarity with all of Barcelona.

All over Catalonia the Muslim community have done many different demonstrations of love and solidarity with the victims and against the terrorists.

Because there is something that connects the whole of humanity and makes sense to life, and this is love.

Love and fraternity is what remains after the shock and the horror. Love is demonstrations are everywhere, love between everybody and love doesn’t understand about fear.
