LA Times Travel Show

(back to blog)

Last Thursday morning saw a couple ToursByLocals staffers waking up very early for a morning flight from Vancouver to Los Angeles. David Young (Travel Agents Accounts Manager) and Sara Cooke (Director of Communications) were en route to California for the LA Times Travel Show, taking place at the LA Convention Center from January 17-19.

Have you been following the weather reports? The Los Angeles area is experiencing unprecedented drought conditions for January, which means these two Vancouverites got to bask in the kind of hot, sunny weather we're only used to in August. Of course most of our time was spent "basking" inside the Convention Center, but we savoured our precious outdoor time!

The Travel Show was a great success. We met some people who had traveled with our guides before, and a great many who had never heard of us, and were very happy to discover that a company like ToursByLocals exists. In between talking with travelers and handing out business cards, I managed to write down a few of the comments I was hearing, things like: “Marvelous!” “What a perfect solution”, “Great idea”, “Wonderful. Thank you so much for doing this”, “This is why we came to the trade show: for real useful information”, “Awesome, this is a great service” and “Wow”.

A trade show day is long, but also extremely energizing. The reception we received from everyone who walked by our booth was so positive, it kept us fueled right up until the doors closed.

We've got to issue a huge "thank you" to the Los Angeles guides who came and worked the booth with us on Saturday and Sunday. Ellen, Jan, Roslyn, Jennie, Vladimir and Jasmine were wonderful ambassadors of ToursByLocals, interacting with travelers in a charming and professional manner. Thank you guys for your company and your help.

Being part of ToursByLocals, we're fortunate to have access to an amazing network of local experts wherever we go - people who can tell us the best ways to make use of our limited free time in their city. Thanks to tips from our guides, we enjoyed some fantastic eats (Jitlaya Thai Restaurant on Sunset Blvd was a real stand out!), saw some remarkable Beaux-Arts architecture downtown, cruised along Rodeo Drive, Wilshire Boulevard and the Hollywood strip and got a fascinating tour of the city's art galleries. We've shared a few photos from our trip above.

Looking forward to doing this all over again in New York City at the end of February!
