A tour through Berlin's tumultuous history of the past 100 years
Starting at Checkpoint Charlie, this popular tour will take you along the former border between the East and the West. By doing so, we will pass the former Reich's Ministry of Aviation (where the infamous Hermann Göring planned the bombings of London and Bath ("Baedeker Bombings") and which today houses Germany's Ministry of Finance, of all things!
We will also get to see the place where Hitler gave his first (non-public) speech in Prussia, back in 1927. Furthermore, we will stop at the Topography of Terror with its excavations of former Gestapo prisons and where one of the last remaining sections of The Wall are still visible. Next comes Potsdamer Platz, which looks nothing like it did 100 years ago, yet is just as busy, and finally, we will reach the location of the Führer Bunker and eventually, the Holocaust Memorial.
The tour ends at the Brandenburg Gate, today a symbol for Germany's darkest but also its most glorious hours.
Meeting up at the corner of Zimmer and Friedrich Strasse (outside or inside, depending on the weater, of Cafe Einstein), we walk our way along the cobblestones which demarcate The Wall that once divided Berlin. Just before we reach the erstwhile Techno-Temple E-Werk, we stop at a building which turned from market hall to concert hall and in which Adolf Hitler gave his first - non-public! - speech in Prussia, in 1927.
Stopping at the Reichs Ministry of Aviation, the Topography of Terror, the Parliament of Berlin, the Zaha Hadid Building, and the Martin Gropius Building - all of which will be explained in detail - we make our way to Potsdamer Platz. For David Bowie fans: the place where he recorded some of his albums will be pointed out.
Covering the Sony Center and the Boulevard of the Stars, we eventually reach the former location of the Führer Bunker before moving on to the Holocaust Memorial, whose design and meaning I will elaborate on in detail, until we reach the Brandenburg Gate, where the tour ends.

Martin was a great tour guide and made WWII Berlin come alive for us. His stories and unique insights into life in East Berlin during the Cold War era were very insightful.
