Visit Ireland's pretty coastal towns and see the breathtaking sights of the Beara Peninsula.
Every lassie to her sailor lad was singing,
A welcoming to Bantry Bay. . .
So goes the famed, old song. Bantry and the Beara Peninsula were once ancient seats of power and bastions of piracy. Here are places where rebellions stirred and tyrannical landlords ruled over a people who named local sights after their suffering, like Hungry Hill. On this tour we travel the long course of Irish history from the Medieval period, to the revolutions of the 18th century, to the struggles of families to survive the cruelties of the nineteenth century and famine. We explore the ruins of castles, abandoned mines, and sites of once-prohibited religious worship in these remote locations.
The fishing villages in the bays and the barren hills overlooking them give the guests the opportunity to see some truly unforgettable sights of Ireland along the winding roads that lead through this remote and rugged parts of West Cork, all in the company of a local historian with an intimate knowledge of the people and the region.
We begin our tour in the historic square of Bantry town overlooking the bay. We drive west to Glengariff to enter the Bearea Peninsula. Castletownbere is our next destination and we can choose to stop here for a quick break along the pier and at Dunboy Castle. The road leads us further out the peninsula and we arrive at Lamb's Head where the famous Dursey Island Cable car is located. Taking the cable car will be dependent on the queue, so ask ahead if this is something the group is interested doing. We return back up the Peninsula and enter the small former mining village of Allihies, and visit the Copper Mine Museum.
We can stop for lunch at a few locations, depending on the preferences of the group, after which we continue onward to the Eyeries. At this point we turn and travel across the peninsula to return to our first location Bantry, to drop guests off. If guests wish to be dropped off at a different location, please contact directly to arrange this.
