Why kill the most powerful man in the free world?!?
Throughout American history, there have been at least 20 assassination attempts on the lives of several US Presidents, both sitting and former. Only four have been successful - Abraham Lincoln (1865), James Garfield (1881), William McKinley (1901), and John F. Kennedy (1963). And two presidents were seriously injured - Theodore Roosevelt (1912) and Ronald Reagan (1981). Others have been the subject of failed attempts like Andrew Jackson, Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, and even Barack Obama. Surprisingly, a number of these incidents have happened in the Nation's Capital with the first attempt in 1835. You'll enjoy the opportunity to journey to several sites and learn about these incidents, the motives behind them, the Presidents, and their assassins.
Utilizing a combination of walking and Metro, assassination sites include:
-U. S. Capitol Building (Can go inside for tour. Tickets available through their website, Representative, or Senator)
-National Gallery of Art (former site of a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad station)
-Ford's Theater and the Petersen House - obtain free same-day tickets to take a tour inside and see the museum as well.
-Lunch stop in downtown
-White House/Lafayette Park (Exterior only. For tours, contact Representative, Senator, or Embassy)
-Blair House (Exterior only)
