Very overlooked, incredibly beautiful
The style was not invented here, but it was perfected here (that is a die hard New Yorker's way of looking at it). Some of the greatest examples of the form are here in Manhattan. However, the often overlooked Bronx, also one of the 5 Boroughs that make up the City of Greater New York, has some very hidden treasures. Young architects, looking to make a name for themselves, got their chance along the Champs Elysee of the Bronx - The Grand Concourse. The area along the Concourse near Yankee Stadium is a treasure trove of deco. We will see some of the Concourse and go back to Manhattan for more. Some of these buildings are icons, not just of the City but of the style itself and some are lesser known. However they all contribute to what makes the skyline here so great and so recognizable. I will show you both (and places in between), the icons and the not icons; but all reasons that make me so happy and proud that I live here.
We will meet at the clock in Grand Central Terminal, the most beautiful and most perfect train station in the world. That's right, the world. Then we will head outdoors and see just what some forward think architects were able to create. We will then go up to "Continental New York"- The Bronx. We will see some incredible civic and apartment buildings along with Yankee Stadium. We will then head back to Manhattan over to the financial district to see how a city ordinance from 1916 will have a hand in effecting architecture and design. We will eventually end up back in Times Square. Then we will head back uptown to the upper west side and see an art - deco Himalayan mountain (which was the inspiration for the spooky building in the original Ghostbusters). We end near the subway, several bus lines and 17, 000 yellow cabs.
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: We will meet at the clock in the Main Concourse of Grand Central Terminal. See the picture above.
End location: At the end of the tour, we will be very near a subway line, the Broadway and Riverside Drive bus lines, yellow cabs, Ubers, Lyfts and Via.
Duration: 6 hours
Variables can change the length of the tour. Traffic, the whims of the New York City Subway system, how fast the group moves, where and what we can or cannot get into depending on the day of the week and the mood of a security guard and how much I talk can effect the length. I usually go over so if you have to be somewhere at a certain time after the tour, please let me know.
