Vincent Van Gogh Sites + Roman and Medieval Highlights : Arles, Saint Remy and Les Baux
This rocky limestone hill range gathers so much history since ancient time.
We will visit Saint Remy - founded by Julius Cesar - in order to see very well preserved roman ruins. It is in the town asylum that Vincent Van Gogh was hospitalized in 1890 and painted "Stars at night" (possibility to visit its room).
Driving to Les Baux the scenery is dry and rocky, covered with olive tree fields. First French olive oil producing area. The medieval village of Les Baux, as an eagle nest, overlooks the valley from the top of its spur.
Explore the village to learn about the secrets of this town where a dynasty of proud and powerful lords lived and where time stood still.
At the foot of the Alpilles Mount, Arles is the former roman capital of Provence. History has been generous with Arles, Roman ruins are numerous and well preserved, religious medieval architecture is exceptional too. Moreover, Vincent Van Gogh, who stayed here in 1889, was much inspired by the local atmosphere and the Provencal traditions.
