The best Greek and Roman collection
This Museum is the home for the immense collection of ancient artfacts that the king Ferdinando I, of the Spanish Bourbon dinasty, inherited from his grandmother Elisabetta Farnese. The discoveries from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae were later added making this one of the finest Archaeological Museums in the world.

The tour starts with an introduction to the history of the building. The Museum is distributed over four floors. The basement holds the Egyptian collection once owned by Borgia family. The ground floor houses the Farnese collection. Most of the pieces were filched from ancient sites in Rome during the 16th century. Among them the famous statues called Farnese Hercules and Farnese Bull.
The mezanin floor houses mosaics from Pompeii including the a large-scale mosaic of Alexander the Great, made with more than 1, 500. 000 tesseras. Also here there's the Secret Cabinet, a collection of ancient erotic paintings and artfacts uncovered at Pompeii and Herculaneum.
The first floor houses a section dedicated to the Villa of Papyri of Herculaneum with statues and artfacts found still intact.
The upper floor is dedicated to the frescoes of Pompeii and Stabiae.
