A tour of architecture and public art, two art museums, a Natural History museum, and a zoo
We will start with a walk through part of Minneapolis' skyway system to see buildings designed by some of the 20th Century's most renowned architects -- Phillip Johnson, I. M. Pei, Cesar Pelli, and SOM. Along the way, we will see plenty of public art (statuary, sculpture, murals and friezes).
We will then visit:
(1) the Minneapolis Institute of Art (with collections of American, European, Asian, African and Native American art);
(2) the newly moved and re-opened Bell Museum of Natural History (with a planetarium and famous murals);
(3) the Como Park Zoo in St. Paul (exhibits that house primates, big cats, and polar bears, as well as a plant conservatory); and
(4) the newly re-opened Minnesota Museum of American Art in St. Paul.
We will probably have lunch at the cafe at the Bell Museum.
We will end the day with a visit to St. Paul's artists' colony in its Lowertown neighborhood.
During the skyway part of the tour, we will visit the following buildings/locations:
IDS Center (with its Crystal Court atrium and architectural "zogs");
Nicollet Mall (newly updated and re-opened pedestrian mall;
Skyway system (a lively and active second story network of walkways throughout the downtown buildings); Cappella Tower (with its half crown top and exhibit of Chihuly pieces);
Famers and Mechanic's Bank Building (outside sculptures); and
Minneapolis City Hall (Richardsonian Romanesque architecture and interior sculptures and design details).
Then we will visit:
Minneapolis Institute of Art (collections of American, European, Asian, African and Native American art);
Bell Museum of Natural History (with a planetarium and famous murals);
Como Park Zoo in St. Paul (exhibits include primates, big cats, and polar bears, as well as a plant conservatory);
