Ian W.

Amsterdam, Nederland, Netherlands

I was born in Amsterdam and give tours/work in tourism since I was 17 .

When I was young I started working as an actor, after which I traveled all over the world.

During my travels I've worked as a tour guide in Brasil, Belgium, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Making people enthusiastic about my town is one of my specialties.
Every tour is an adventure, with 100% customer satisfaction.

I specialize in giving private tours in the old city center of Amsterdam and the Red Light District.

The Red Light District is one of the most interesting and beautiful neighborhoods in the world, but it has a bad reputation. It somehow became my mission to show visitors the many beautiful sides of the area.

This area has some of the best restaurants, bars, tasting rooms, museums, stores and nightlife of Amsterdam.

I am a really well known 5* tour guide in the area, no tour is the same. Sometimes locals invite us inside, or we have a small cheese or chocolate tasting or other adventure.
It all depends on the wishes of the group. I mastered the talent of being able to adapt to the wishes of my groups.

My grandfather used to own one of the first bars in the old city center for black sailors. I love telling stories about multicultural Amsterdam (most multicultural city in the world!), the 17th century, Red Light as the old harbor area, second world war, tolerance towards religion, the Dutch soft drugs policy, prostitution and current changes in the neighborhood.

- PROJECT 1012
The city council is working on a very large project called 1012, with which eventually one third of the coffeeshops and more than half of the window brothels will be closed in the Red Light District. So far already more than 900 million euro's has been invested.

Due to this project, creatives (like myself) are able to rent these former window brothels and start a new business inside. I am the only tourguide in Amsterdam with a former window brothel (two actually!), in the world famous most narrow alleyway of Amsterdam. Together with my wife I own a chocolate & spice store,
during some of my tours we can include a stop or chocolate tasting .

In Brasil I've worked with an indigenous tribe called the Pataxó, with my foundation Terra Nossa.

Photography is one of my hobby's, I also own a small creative photostudio in the most famous alleyway of the Redlight district of Amsterdam.

A Recent Review of this guide

It was my first live tour experience with ToursByLocals and I couldn't be happier with it! Ian did a fantastic job showing me the highlights of the Red Light District of Amsterdam. It really felt as if I was there, walking those narrow alleys. Definitely an experience that I'd recommend to anyone planning to go to Amsterdam. Ian, thank you very much for your time and I hope to meet you in person next year in Amsterdam. Cheers, Javier!

- I don't guide in museums
- I don't own a car but if necessary can arrange transfer. Do notice: public transport is pretty good arranged in Holland and usually cheaper.
