Gastro and eco private tour to the Alpujarra valley in Almería
Almería has been Europe's poorest corner since the city was taken over by Christians in the early 12th century, to the begging of the 20th century. Today the province is above average income in Spain, mainly due to the export of vegetables through central and northern Europe. The greenhouse industry is at the core of this transformation, but its roots are deeply related to the cultivation of table grapes from late 19th century ultil 40 years ago.
This excursion implies and measurably benefits several traditional grape and wine producers who resisted or returned from the greenhouse-intensive agricultural industry. They decided to go ahead or start over, going against the markets and the political decisions of ripping the vines in the seventies and eighties.
Thanks to them, you can enjoy one of the most wonderful humanized mountainous landscapes of Andalusia: The Alpujarra Almeriense. Come and join this journey through the senses.
From the city of Almería we will take the road to the Valley of the Alpujarra. In our first stop we will immerse ourselves in the table grape universe of Almería. Traditions and ethnography in black and white link the past and the present of this rural but proud society. Learn about the way the grape was grown and the world market associated with the table grape economy at the "Uva de Barco" museum.
From there we will lead to a valley that is the direct legacy of viticulture on terraces. A vertical landscape with picturesque white villages, where every square inch of land was cultivated. Still some farmers work in the traditional way, fighting against time and modernity, and we will visit one of those terraced farms (included).
The final stop is an organic winery, where you can enjoy a country lunch (Included in the price, check availability) made with their products, after visiting the land and getting in touch with a living philosophy that impresses me every time I go.
