No need to hang around the airport!
If you have anything from a 3 - 5 hour stop over get a fascinating glimpse of Johannesburg and Soweto! Downtown Jozi is a sight to behold. Not the normal Inner City for very good reasons. A gritty city not a pretty city that started off as a rough gold mining camp in 1886. Experience the struggle to reclaim the city and turn it around. See the different styles of architecture from different decades side by side from Victorian to Edwardian Baroque to Italiante to Brutalist! From there we take a drive through Soweto, the largest and most important African township in South Africa. Set up as a migrant labour camp in the early 1900's it is now called home by 4 -5 million African people. Colourful, bustling and hustling is what its all about.
From the airport we go into the Inner City and take a drive through the different precincts i. e. Braamfontein, Newtown, Maboneng and the Mining District. If time permits we go to the Top Of Africa on the 50th floor of the Carlton Centre for a birds eye view of the city. From there straight into the heart of Soweto with a drive past Chris Hani Barogwanath Hospital, the 3rd largest in the world, the Soweto Towers to Freedom Square in Kliptown, then onto Vilakazi St past the House of Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela. If time permits we will then visit the Hector Pieterson Museum which tells the story of what happened on 16th June 1976.

Highly informative tour of central Johannesburg. We saw and learnt a lot in a few hours and had time for a local meal as well. Mark was very knowledgeable and an excellent guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
