The Brookland neighborhood in Washington has the nickname "Little Rome" because of its great concentration of Catholic institutions -- beginning with The Catholic University of America and the beautiful Franciscan Monastery. The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is a colorful jewelbox holding over 50 chapels. Spend half a day on campus and at the Shrine, or half a day visiting the neighborhood with its churches and local sights (including a Civil War fort), or make a full day of it with lunch where the locals eat.

Catholic University campus, passing John Paul II Center, Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 1850s Harewood gatehouse, Mary Garden, and older administration buildings, snacks in the Student Center;
Neighborhood tour: 1830's Brooks Mansion, streets of 1890 - 1930s houses, passing Bishop's House, Augustinian and Jesuit Colleges, Civil War-era Fort Bunker Hill park, Franciscan Monastery (inc interior) and gardens, Holy Name College, Josephat College, Varnum campus, return through Turkey Thicket neighborhood to Brookland, lunch at some local place.

Hayden was a wonderful tour guide. He knows the city lay out and the neighbors so well. Our group ranged in ages 12-79 and we all had a delightful time. Nothing is rushed but you will learn a ton!!!
