Old Mansions, an Old Farmhouse, Quiet Streets and a Really Big Church with private guide
This walk takes us through the Cleveland Park neighborhood, named after its early resident President Grover Cleveland. The area is a wealth of beautiful Victorian country houses and tree-lined quiet streets (we'll take some hidden stairs to get there). Rosedale is an early 19th-century farmhouse, fronted by an unusual public park. And then the Washington National Cathedral, the magnificent Gothic Episcopal cathedral sited on one of the city's highest points. We can visit the church, relax in the Bishop's Garden and then return through the quiet Woodley Park neighborhood (passing two impressive mansions and another fine garden) or hop a bus (passing the new Russian embassy) and head to Georgetown.
Start at the Cleveland Park Metro, stroll through the neighborhood past Rosedale house and park to the National Cathedral; tour of church, stop for snack and relax outside (under the gargoyles) and visit the Bishop's Garden and Olmstead Walk. Either return (the Woodley Park Metro) past the Woodley (early 19th century) and Tregaron (early 20th century) mansions and gardens, or pick up a bus down Wisconsin to spend the rest of the day in Georgetown.
We will be sure that when you are done you have a good idea of the layout of Cleveland Park and can find any other places you plan to visit later, as well as any other areas that interest you. And I'll give you a map!
