Gardens, Shopping, Old Houses and a Canal with private guide
Georgetown was a small river port town before anyone thought of Washington DC, and it still has much of its early 19th-century flavor -- quiet streets of charming old houses and churches, an 1820s canal, riverfront warehouses converted to mod stores and movie theaters, Georgetown University . . . so much to see! A full-day tour might well begin with one of the large old mansions now open as museums, each with extensive formal gardens. Perhaps then a walk to the University and to see the long, long outdoor steps featured in "The Exorcist", or tiny renovated Cady's Alley with it's swank shops. The C&O Canal has a beautiful park for its entire length crossed by wooden foot bridges. Stop at the first (or second or third) cafe that looks interesting for a snack or lunch, see the shops on M Street, visit spectacular Washington Harbor -- and I leave you there for a (romantic?) evening of shopping, stolling and dinner.
Itinerary arranged according to your interest -- here is one possibility: Dunbarton Oaks (garden, Byzantine and Pre-Columbian Art Museum), stroll to G'town University and Exorcist Steps, lunch at Cady's Alley, noodle along M Street/C&O Canal, rest up at the stunning and tre trendy Washington Harbor, on to Metro or leave you for evening there.
We will be sure that when you are done you have a good idea of the layout of Georgetown and can find any other places you plan to visit later, as well as any other areas that interest you. And I'll give you a map!
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: Meet at hotel (probable taxi ride to G'town), or at agreed-upon Metro stop (walk into to G'town); if at Metro I will describe my clothing (usually my hat) when we make arrangements.
