Embassies, Museums, Restaurants and the Circle with private guide
From about the 1930s foreign embassies began to settle in magnificent old mansions of the (now bankrupt) wealthy in the Dupont Circle neighborhood; this stretch of Massachusetts Avenue is nicknamed "Embassy Row" for that. The neighborhood is still beautiful, still wealthy and in many ways the heart of Washington. Nowhere else do so many classes/races/ages all come together in one place as Dupont Circle. We'll see the embassies, several hidden-away museums, the secret Spanish Steps, landmark apartment buildings, parks . . . and so much more! Including beaucoup places to lounge with a latte or claret.
We meet at Dupont circle and probably start with a walk up beautiful Embassy Row; why not visit Anderson House, the stunning 1905 mansion of Lars Anderson?, or the Islamic Center (the city's chief mosque)? or Woodrow Wilson's house? We can find the lovely Spanish Steps and visit Mitchell Park above them (we locals sometimes call it "Poodle Park") -- the oldest house in the city is two block away! Houses hidden in the alleys, a 1920s classical-style gas station with columns, the International Student House, a tiny street with sculpture above the doors of every other house, a burned out church now an open park . . . what an interesting part of town! Not to mention cafes, shops, and of course the Circle itself. Did I tell you that Theodore Roosevelt's daughter used to live in that house over there?
We will be sure that you get a good idea of the layout of Dupont Circle and can find any other places you plan to visit later, as well as any other areas that interest you. And I'll give you a map!

Very informative tour. Hayden added a few indoor stops due to a very cold January morning. Very flexible!
