C. tour guide, I thrive on exploring D. C. 's "big outside. " I love introducing others to our amazing and highly walkable capital city, from the National Mall and Old Downtown to the quaint, historic areas where the locals go, like Barracks Row, Eastern Market, the Southwest Waterfront, Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan and U. Street, to mention a few. Their stories are compelling, mysterious and humorous, as we amble along soaking it all in.
First-time visitors will definitely want to catch the jaw-dropping monuments, memorials and museums along the National Mall. But there is much more to see when we step off the beaten path and immerse ourselves in local culture, architecture, street music and art, quirky alcoves, relaxing greenspace and the countless hidden gems that truly make Washington, D. C. a world-class city. I know these areas well and strive to ensure that every tour is unique and rewarding.
My walking tours combine the best of great stories and great landscapes. I'll keep things moving, but at an easy pace (with a rest bench close by when we need it). I also seek to be inspired by something new and unexpected around every turn. As a semi-serious photographer, I also know when the lighting is right and where to go to shoot fabulous photos.
I've lived for nearly a decade in Washington, D. C. and Alexandria, Virginia, just across the Potomac River. However, now that I'm semi-retired, I keep a toehold on both coasts, spending substantial time in both Washington, D. C. and the Pacific Northwest near Seattle.
I have a professional background in environmental planning and outdoor recreation, including the design of trails and bikeways. I have also worked as a land use, shoreline and recreation planner with federal, state and local agencies, and have frequently volunteered with nonprofit organizations supporting outdoor recreation, parks, wildlife conservation and renewable energy. I am an avid hiker, frequent traveler, national parks junkie, the author of four hiking and walking guides, as well as a grateful husband to my outdoors-loving wife, Kris.
