Journey up the flanks of the world's most active volcano to discover land that is younger than you are!
WOW! is defined as "an exclamation of surprise, wonder, or pleasure" and viewing a simmering, glowing cauldron inside a live volcano can certainly guarantee that response!
There is so much to learn about Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that I like to begin my narration on the scenic drive up Volcano Road, sharing everything from traditional Hawaiian folklore to the unusual geological history that makes our Hawaiian volcanoes unique.
We will visit the renowned Jagger Museum with its stunning caldera overlook and hike through a mature Ohia/ Hapu'u fern forest right to the volcano's edge. We can stand next to natural steam vents, dousing us with vaporized water from the hot magma underground. We will peer over the impressive Kilauea Iki crater, and be serenaded by birds as we walk through the Nahuku (Thurston) Lava tube.
There is a wide choice of trails for hiking- from easy pavement to mild, uneven terrain- all with breathtaking vistas, many providing choice spots for a delicious, locally-made picnic lunch.

Jagger Museum & Kilauea overlook. We will stay here as long as you would like, but then head to a "road less traveled" nearby for a short walk along the crater rim.

Kilauea Iki crater overlook- site of the amazing 1959 fountain of lava eruption
Nahaku (Thurston) Lava Tube- (Note: There are stairs with safety rails)
Devastation Trail- a 5 minute hike to the Pu'u Pua'i cinder cone created by the Kilauea Iki eruption
(Various options for additional hikes- from flat, easy pavement to mildly uneven terrain)

(Optional stop at a small local farmer's market. Locally grown coffee anyone?)
Visit Rainbow Falls
End the day at Queen Lili'uokalani Park
Drop off at location of your choice
Note: I am able to modify our start time to stay after sunset & witness "The Glow" of the molten lava on the rising plume.
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: I will meet you at a place of your choosing in the Hilo area, (including the Puna District). For cruise ship passengers, I will meet you outside the Port's receiving building. Look for me smiling and waving my black, Jolly Roger (pirate) flag.
End location: I will drop you off at your Hilo/ Puna District accommodations, or a place of your choosing. For cruise ship passengers, I will drop you off at the port where I picked you up.
Duration: 7 hours 30 min.
If you have a flexible schedule consider this- by bumping the start time until noon, you could stay in the Park for sunset to witness the dramatic glow of the lava in the crater reflecting on the plume and clouds above.
Sometimes weather & traffic may be a factor in tour duration but I will be alert to such circumstances and arrange time accordingly. For cruise ship passengers, I schedule the Hilo portion of the tour at the end of the day so we will always be back in plenty of time for your ship's curfew.
You will be escorted in a very comfortable, clean, well-maintained, air-conditioned 2000 Honda Odyssey Passenger van. Please note that although we list the maximum passengers as 5, there are seatbelts for 6. (A "co-pilot" seat, 2 captain's chairs, and a back, bench-style seat, which holds 3, but is more comfortable with 2.)
All transportation, park fees, a delicious locally made lunch, light snacks & beverages, ponchos & umbrellas (if needed), your own photo folder in the "Cloud", stories, jokes, and a knowledgeable, enthusiastic guide.
The price of this tour does not include the purchase of items of a personal nature such as: souvenirs, "adult" beverages, any fruits or veggies purchased at the local market, etc.
- My tours are Hilo-based. If you are coming from Kona side, we could meet in Hilo, or if interested in Volcanoes Park tour I can meet you in Volcano Village, just outside the park entrance.
- Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate passengers in wheelchairs.
