This adventure includes a hike on the famous Kilauea Iki Trail. Walk inside a volcano's crater!
Ready for adventure? Eager to immerse yourself into the dramatic landscape? This tour includes a moderate, 4-mile hike along the impressive Kileaea Iki Trail, a striking loop that descends 400 feet to the hardened lava lake below- the frozen remains of the 1959 eruption. While crossing the crater floor, we will experience the heat from that event escaping through cracks and fumaroles. It is incredible!
After a delicious, locally-made picnic lunch, we then ascend on switchbacks (at a comfortable rate) to the famous Nahuku (Thurston) Lava tube, which brings us through an ancient fern forest, filled with endemic plant and animal species, and the serenade of our local birds.
Preceding the hike, we will be visiting the Jaggar Museum & overlook, and the Visitor Center, both filled with information to enhance your understanding and appreciation of this unique environment. Post-hike activities will be selected from a diverse set of choices, including the stunning, (prearranged) "Glow Option. "

Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: I will meet you at a place of your choosing in the Hilo area, (including the Puna District). For cruise ship passengers, I will meet you outside the Port's security gate at the end of the green fence. Look for me smiling and waving my black, Jolly Roger (pirate) flag.
End location: I will drop you off at your Hilo/ Puna District accommodations, or a place of your choosing. For cruise ship passengers, I will drop you just outside the Port's security gate.
Duration: 8 hours
If you have a flexible schedule consider this- by bumping the start time until 11am, you could stay in the Park for sunset to witness the dramatic glow of the lava in the crater reflecting on the plume and clouds above.
Sometimes weather & traffic may be a factor in tour duration but I will be alert to such circumstances and arrange time accordingly. For cruise ship passengers, I schedule the Hilo portion of the tour at the end of the day so we will always be back in plenty of time for your ship's curfew.
You will be escorted in a very comfortable, clean, well-maintained, air-conditioned 2000 Honda Odyssey Passenger van. Please note that although we list the maximum passengers as 5, there are seatbelts for 6. (A "co-pilot" seat, 2 captain's chairs, and a back, bench-style seat, which holds 3, but is more comfortable with 2.)
All transportation, park fees, a delicious locally made lunch, light snacks & beverages, ponchos & umbrellas (if needed), your own photo folder in the "Cloud", stories, jokes, and a knowledgeable, enthusiastic guide.
The price of this tour does not include the purchase of items of a personal nature such as: souvenirs, "adult" beverages, any fruits or veggies purchased at the local market, etc.
- My tours are Hilo-based. If you are coming from the Kona side, we could meet at a pre-determinded spot in Hilo, or in Volcano Village, just outside the park entrance.
- Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate passengers in wheelchairs.
